Off-duty police officers in Houston — when the post needs a peace officer.
A Level III guard is not a peace officer. Use this page when the venue or the street needs sworn authority. We coordinate off-duty police next to our own officers and write the roles so nobody is doing the job twice. Availability follows department rules. Call early.
A Texas Level III guard is not a peace officer. When a Houston event or post needs sworn authority — public-street traffic, arrest power, or a venue that requires it — Houston Tactical Agency coordinates off-duty police on request and can sit them next to our Level II/III/IV officers under one plan.
When a private guard is the wrong license

Private security officers in Texas work under the DPS Private Security Bureau. They observe, report, control access, and call the police. They do not bring a peace officer’s arrest authority. If your event is on a public street, your venue requires sworn officers, or the risk is “we may need someone who can arrest,” this is the page. Houston Tactical Agency coordinates that labor on request — we do not pretend a Level III holster is the same thing.

How off-duty police requests work
- ›Call with the date, hours, location, and why you want police instead of (or in addition to) private officers.
- ›Availability depends on department secondary-employment rules. Early requests have a better chance.
- ›We write roles so private officers and off-duty police are not doing the same job twice.
Common Houston use cases
- ›Large public events that need traffic or crowd authority
- ›High-profile or VIP details
- ›Posts where arrest powers may be required
- ›Hybrid details: our licensed officers plus off-duty police
What it costs
Sworn secondary employment rates are not the same as private Level II/III. Department rules, hours, and how many officers you need drive the number. We quote after we know the date is even staffable.
Everything you need to know about this post.
Are off-duty officers always available?
No. Availability depends on the date, hours, and department policies. Call early. We will not confirm a name we do not have.
Can off-duty police work with your private security officers?
Yes. Hybrid teams are common. We coordinate roles under clear post orders.
Is this the same as hiring a private security company?
No. Off-duty police are sworn officers on secondary employment. Our guards operate under Texas DPS Private Security Bureau license B10550901. We help you choose and combine them.
Do I still need private officers if I hire police?
Often yes. Police handle authority. Private officers still run doors, lots, and the rest of the site. That is usually cheaper and clearer than asking a peace officer to bag-check.
